Biography
1943 Born in Stockholm, Sweden. After 1945 travels with parents in Europe. Spends all summers with his father in Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Travels alone by air or train through Europe visiting lots of art museums at a very young age. Goes to school in Sweden, Belgium and Switzerland. Disciplinary problems all the way to G.C.E. A levels. At high school in Sweden RB does not receive any regular grades due to absence used for sports, walks, drawing and painting but does graduate. During the last year of high school attends evening classes at the art school Grundskolan för konstnärlig utbildning in Stockholm.
1963 Studies at ABF Art School and at the Faculty of Law, University of Stockholm.
1964 Travels 8 months on the Islands of Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Also stays in Seville, Madrid and Barcelona. Paints a lot. Studies as a non-paying pupil at the Art school of Idun Lovén and attends the Faculty of History and Theory of Art, University of Stockholm.
1965 Goes to Greece for six month to Greece to take part in archeological excava-tions, which he immediately finds too boring. RB paints, draws and studies the Greek art world instead. Lives in a tent for months and paints. Continues his studies at University of Stockholm, Department of History and Theory of Art and attends the Art school of Idun Lovén, Stockholm.
1966 Studies for the Swedish sculptor Bror Marklund at the Academy of Art, Stockholm, leaves for personal reasons. Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Stockholm.
1967 Completes studies at the Department of History and Theory of Art with an essay Swedish Sculpture in the 20th century: Asmund Arle, Bengt Amundin, Willy Gordon and Bror Marklund.
1967-1968 Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Stockholm.
1967-1973 Master of Fine Art, MFA, at the Sculpture Department, University Stockholm.
1969-1972 Builds his studio in the former school of Vekhyttan. Sails a lot on the East Sea. Attends local exhibitions. Travels to Italy with artist friends down to Sicily and a year later to Rome.
1969 Gallery Åhuset, Arboga.
1970 Gallery Gröna Lund, Stockholm.
1971 Studies glass blowing, glass work at Orrefors Glasbruk.
1972 The Municipal Gallery of Sandviken and Örebro Länets konst, regional exhibitions.
1973 Graduates and receives the most prestigious grant Åhlensstipendiet. Winner of the competition for the World Wildlife Fund, WWF symbol in glass. Exhibits at Gallery Engelbrekt, Örebro.
1974 Selected for the national exhibition 15 unga skulptörer at the Royal Academy of Art, Stockholm. Exhibits in Bengtsfors. One-man show at Konstfrämjandet, Örebro. Receives the Cultural Award of Örebro City.
1975 Exhibits in Västerås, at the Municipal Gallery of Karlskoga and at the municipal Gallery of Kristinehamn. Teaches large high burning kiln constructions at the international Symposium at Rödjenäs.
1976 One man show in the Gallery Mors Mössa, Gothenburg. Exhibits in Gerlesborg. Örebro City. Receives travel grant to study bronze castings in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy.
1977 One-man show at the Municipal Gallery Nygårdsmagasinet, Linköping. Exhibition at the Museum of Örebro. Exhibitions at the Museums of Örebro and Värmland. Exhibition at Gallery Jarl. First public commission: The 2,5 m high The stonemason in white marble from Ekeberg. Exhibits Das Kapital, a 3 m woman floating in a river. In Florence with L. Kullgren to study and create a stage design for Electra in well known international opera director Rexford Harrower¹s book ”The New Opera House”. Visits more than 120 bronze foundries in Italy. Selects Tomassi renamed Massimo del Chiaro, Pietrasanta, where he spends long working periods with his sculptures every year since then.
1978 Exhibits in the Municipal Gallery of Vlaardingen and Gallery Egel in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Exhibits in Flaménska gården, Borås. Represents the City of Örebro at the exhibition in Willman-strand, Finland.
1979 One-man show at Gallery Mors Mössa, Gothenburg and Konstfrämjandet, Örebro. Exhibits with other artists in Mälargalleriet, Stockholm and Joar Blå, Enköping.
1980 Exhibits in Gallery Stenhuset, Norrköping, ABF Gallery in Eskilstuna and at the Municipal Galleries of Södertälje and Sandviken. Finishes a commission work for Bygghälsan, Stockholm. Founds, with friends, the new independent Art school of Örebro where RB is head of Sculpture Department until 1987.
1981 One-man show at Gallery Max, Stockholm. Public commission work for the new built library and municipal building in Lindesberg. Participates in the International Art Exhibition in Vävring, Norway.
1982 One-man show Force at the Municipal Gallery Wadköpingshallen. State travel grant to Japan, also visits Nepal, India, Thailand and Russia.
1982-1983 Public commission project for the new suburb Sörbyängen, Örebro.
1983 Large exhibition on a demolition- and rebuilding through Galleria non Grata (Brixel, Kullgren, Nilsson) on the theme Death and Survival, Örebro. Exhibition with L. Kullgren, Kristinehamn. President of the Swedish Artist Union, KRO. President of the Swedish IAA, International Association of Art and many other Commissions of Trust Declines the awarded Grundersättning for Artist from the Swedish Councill Art Board.
1984 One-man show at the Gallery Mors Mössa was closed by the local Fire Department and reopened after large public and media debates. Exhibits at Östra Skånes konsthall.
1985 One-man show at the Gallery Valhall, Norrköping. Installs the sculpture Balance, a 2,2 m high walking women in bronze on a 12 m x 6 m fountain. Installs the bronze sculpture and fountain Metamorphosis, 3.1 m. Installs the public commission work Annette in Södertälje. Introducer of the International Art Week in Sweden. Receives a grant for open space project from Swedish State Art board. Acquires a boat building yard where he sets up his studio, at the lake Hjälmaren, to the west of Stockholm.
1986-1990 Constructs 10 square m large high burning kilns around his sculptures directly on the ground, permitting RB to burn his 3 m high terracotta sculptures. Participates in the Exhibition-tour Women¹s work. The sculpture Annette causes much debate due to her challenging forms and is, despite her 200 kilos, stolen.
1986 Erects the 5 m high bronze sculpture Näcken for the Concert hall in Örebro. Erects a marble fountain and the bronze sculpture Pregnant Angel in Örebro. Introducer and organizer of the first Computer Art Symposium in Sweden.
1987 One-man show at the Gallery Doctor Glas, Stockholm. One--man installation Über Leben in the experimental Municipal Gallery Prima Kunst, Kiel, West Germany. One-man show at the Gallery Fenix, Örebro. Participates and supports the achievement of The Art Gaz station in Laxå, participates in exhibitions at Gallery Nordvästen, Helsingborg, at the municipal Gallery in Arvika and Gallery Montecristo in Örebro.
1988 One-man show at the Municipal Gallery of Arboga. Participates in an exhibition in Denmark and at Marieberg in Örebro. Installs the monumental sculpture Ford 57 outside Karlskoga. Winner of the national public competition for a sculpture on the central square in Filipstad. 1989 One-man show at the Gallery Mors Mössa, Gothenburg and Life at the Municipal Gallery, Örebro. Takes part in the exhibition Art in sport. Installs a three m sculpture in Malung. Teaches special bronze casting techniques to other artists.
1990 One-man show at Haanaholmen, Helsinki, Finland. Erects the 4,5 m high bronze sculpture ”Näcken” in Karlstad. Organizer and participant in the exhibition Art and Church Ö89. Exhibits in Vienna, Austria. Receives working grant from the Swedish State Art Board and a grant from the Swedish Council Cultural Board to study bronze and special bronze casting techniques in US 1991 Participant in the first international sculpture exhibition at De Hazelaar in Soest, the Netherlands. Invited to a residency on neomythology in Banff Center, Canada, for a 3-month stay. Receives grants from Sweden and Canada. One-man show at the Banff Center, Alberta, Canada. One--man show in the garden of Klosterkielhof, Germany. One--man show at the municipal Gallery of Kumla. Erects the bronze Caryatid, a three m bronze figure and water fountain group for the new built block Smedjebacken in Örebro downtown.
1992 Erects the 5.1 m high Winged spirit, in bronze for Granängsringen in Stockholm. Erects the sculptures Wing a 5.5 m high sculpture in bronze, 3,5 m Pyramid in white Swedish marble and a 25 ton heavy. Dwell also in Swedish white marble for the new built park at former airport in Gustavsvik. Travels to Tescan, Rumania and to Mexico living in San Miguel de Allende for a two month free stay offered by an American architect.
1993 One-man show at Konstens hus, Varberg. Castle of Nynäs, open-air park and indoor exhibition. Composes the music for his installation Näcken¹s travels together with German composer Johannes Cernota. Brixel and German composer Johannes Cernota compose the music to Brixel¹s ²Eve¹s Black Paradise and produces a limited edition CD.
1994 One-man opening show with the installation Näcken¹s travel for the rebuilt Museum of Art, Örebro. Receives the Swedish state big grant award for working with his art. Takes part in exhibition at Arboga Municipal Gallery.
1995 Erects the 3,2 m high bronze Friendship, the 6.5 m high white marble sculpture Riktmärke and four sketches in marble Dance in stone 1,2 m x1, 2 m, for the University of Örebro. Participant in the first open air exhibition in Åkerby Herrgård. First exhibition with the group D4 in Hällefors. Takes part in exhibition at Arboga Municipal Gallery.
1996 Erects the bronze sculpture Hemfärd/Homeward Bound. Askersund, Hamntorget. Erects the 4 m high bronze sculpture Quattro Amici Felici with five basins, totally 8 m x 8 m triangular shaped in marble, slate and hematite, for Karlskoga down town, City of Nobel. Exhibition and performance Näckens Reise in Vienna, Austria. Stockholm Art Fair, Gallery Astleys, and Arboga Municipal Gallery. Opens with D4 the AF-Kultur Gallery in Örebro.
1997 One-man show at Gallery Max in Stockholm and at Pumphuset in Lindesberg. Participates in the international Sculpture exhibition Ecce Homo, Netherlands.
1998 One-man show in Luleå, 900 square m municipal art gallery and in Kirchhatten, Germany. Participates in Kumla, Konst på hög. Exhibits in Stockholm, Nacka, with outdoor and indoor sculptures. Brixel and German composer Johannes Cernota compose the music to Brixel¹s Eve¹s Black Paradise and produces a limited edition of CDs.
1999 Exhibits at Eskilstuna Art Museum with D4 group. One--man show at Karlskoga konsthall. Takes part in other different shows in Sweden. Installs the 3.2 m bronze sculpture Leafs for Tullängsskolan with hidden electronically equipment for movement, warmth and whispering of love poems.
2000 Exhibits the greater than life size sculptures in bronze Piano II, Human being and Growing up at Keukenhof, Netherlands. Exhibits at de Hazelaar Gallery, Netherlands. One-man show at Gallery Örsta, Kumla and with the D4 group at the Museum of Frövifors. Travels to China on invitation of professor Wei Xiao Ming and gives a lecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, CAFA, Beijing, China.
2001 Erects the 7 m high sculpture She who captured the lightning in Eskilstuna city Human being, over life size sculpture in bronze, is acquired by the Hazart Art Foundation in Netherlands. Golf player I, 3.5 m bronze is erected in Kumla. Participates at the international Sculpture exhibition in Soest, Netherlands, the international exhibition at Klosterkielhof in Germany and Kumla Art on a Mountain, Åkerby Sculpture Park and other exhibitions.
2002 Erects the 8.5 m Lightning in Ludvika. Exhibits the Philosopher at a crossing 2.5 m in bronze at Karlstad Museum. Erects the 3.5 m Dancing Philosopher in Beijing, China Invited and travels to the inauguration of the Viking part of the 3,3 m high monument Two worlds Meeting at L¹Anse aux Meadows where the Vikings landed 1000 years ago thereby completing humanities travel round the whole world.
2003 One-man show at Örebro Museum, Enköpings konsthall and at Gallery Colnrade, Germany. Participates at the Hazart Art Foundation Sculpture Exhibition, Netherlands and Stockholm Art Fair. Inauguration of the 3 m high Ronnie Peterson Sculpture and invited to The first Beijing International Art Biennale, 2003, China. Takes part in Arboga, Hallstahammar, and an international internet SARS-exhibition. Örsta/Kumla and Konstfrämjandet shows. Book about Brixel´s art printed.
2004 Works with the Ayrton Senna Monument Magic Senna. Exhibits at the Grimaldi forum museum, Monte Carlo, Monaco Exhibits at Steketplätten, Stockholm.
2005 Artist´s house, Konstnärshuset, Stockholm, group exhibition and auction in favor of Médecins sans frontières. Group exhibitions at Arboga Art Hall, Virsbo Art Hall at Gallery Astley with Sculptors´Association. Invited and takes part in the exhibition i segni e le forme in Pietrasanta with the Magic Senna. 2nd International Beijing Biennale with Ulla, Goddess of Justice. Models The Arboga happy Philosopher for the city of Arboga at Del Chiaro in Pietrasanta. . The sculpture is inaugurated in Arboga October 8, 2006. Takes part in the Ambulance donation team for Abeinu, MoroccoErects the steel structur for the sculpture Johannes Anton Selander in Pietrasanta in June and models the sculpture in August-September. The sculpture Johannes Anton Selander is inaugurated in Eskilstuna November 14, 2006. Galleri Örsta, group exhibition. Models the double sculpture Twin Philosophers 1.50 m at del Chiaro, Italy.
2006 One-man show Galleri Örsta, Kumla. Invited and takes part in the XI Arte&Città exhibition in San Giovanni de Persiceto at Bologna, Italy. Invited to take part in exhibitions at Gallery Kunststück in Oldenburg, Germany. The Ayrton Senna Sculpture is sold to the art collector Bernd Eylers and is transported to his park near Bremen, Germany. The sculpture Ronnie Peterson is also transported to Bernd Eylers park in Germany to be exhibited. One-man show at Gallery Karlslund, Örebro. Invited to participate in the celebrations at Fine Art Academy at the Tsinghua Univerity of Beijing, China. Participates at the opening show of the new opened Galleri Konstrundan in Arboga.
2007 One-man show at the Konserthus in Stockholm. Models the 5 m high Michael Schumacher on the Ferrarihorse in Italy. One-man show at Ringsegården, Falkenberg. 2008 3rd International Beijing Art Biennale with Twin Philosophers. ”Dream” 4 m bronze of three horses and three riders to the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, placed in the Olympic Park, close to the Bird´s Nest. Michael Schumacher on the Ferrari horse, 5 m bronze is erected in a private park, near Bremen, Germany Takes part in the open air exhibition at Marsvinsholm Castle. Takes part at Stockssunds torp group exhibition, Stockholm. Stadshuset Tranås with Carl Milles and Ansgar Almquist. New book on Brixel´s art presented at the Book Fair in Gothenburg.
